195 Swedish Cinnamon Rolls – Kanelbullar

These are cinnamon rolls that I baked last Friday. Looks yummy huh?
I tried to translate the recipe of  Kanelbullar into English – but that wasn’t easy. You guys have such a complicated measuring system!! Is there anybody out there who knows both systems that can verify my conversion? Now that I worked so hard with the translation – you’d better try the recipe!!

150 grams butter (1,3 sticks)
5dl milk (2 cups)
1 cube fresh yeast, 50 grams (I have no idea how you measure yeast so this one you’ll have to find out)
1dl sugar (almost ½ cup)
1tsp salt
1,4 L wheat flour (4-4,5 cups)
2 tsp grounded cardamom (optional. I don’t use it because I don’t like it)

Filling
150 grams butter (1,3 sticks) room temperature
½ cup sugar
cinnamon

1 egg
Pearl sugar

Break the yeast in a bowl. Melt the butter and add milk. Warm it up until it’s warmish.(37°C  / 98°F)  Now pour the mixture over the yeast. Finally add the other ingredients and work the dough. Let the dough rise under a kitchen towel for about 30 min or until it has doubled the size.

Prepare the filling by mixing the butter (room temperature) with the sugar.

After the dough has rested, divide it into four pieces. Roll the first piece out so that it is about 1/3 inch thick. Butter it  with the butter/sugar mixture and sprinkle it with cinnamon. Now you roll it up. Take a sharp knife and slice it into ten pieces. Put the pieces on a baking tray with baking paper or in paper liners. Do this with the other three pieces of dough too. Now the rolls have to rest another 40 minutes, under a kitchentowel. Use the last 20 minutes to preheat the oven to 225°C /482°F

Beat up an egg and brush egg on the rolls and sprinkle pearl sugar on them.
Put them in the oven for 5-8 min.

Did you know that the Swedish Cinnamon Roll has its own day? Every year at October 4th is “Kanelbullens dag” – The cinnamon roll’s day.

167 How I miss baking

Today when I was baking cookies wih the kids I realized how much I miss baking. I used to bake all our bread for a long time… but I stopped – due to too many babies running around the stove – and eczema. Since then I bake a cake, or cookies, once in a while.. no more.

But today I realized how much I really miss it.. and I ran out to the store with the kids to buy some flour and yeast.. So tomorrow morning I’m gonna bake fresh bread for sabbath!! 🙂 That’s a good therapy when I have a break from studying… And it leaves such a nice smell in the house.. and it’s yummy for sabbath breakfast. Yeay!

I can’t help I like this kind of “news”. Today Iran tried on getting into Guinness Book of World Records by making the biggest sandwich ever. They planned to fill the 1,5 kilometer long sandwich with 1400kg meat. But before they managed to measure the huge sandwich people already started eating – so they couldn’t measure!!

¤ 109 The Best Kind of Fridays

I love those Fridays when the weather is nice.. not too hot – not too cold – no rain. Then I just send hubby out to the playground with the kids in the afternoon..

And I have the entire afternoon alone at home for cleaning and cooking and preparing for shabat. No kids to stumble upon.. no screaming, no begging, no small fingers to keep away from the stove, no stolen oven mittens, no fighting in the kids’ room, no small (or big) feet making new footprints where I just cleaned, no kid that badly needs to pee when I just got started cleaning the toilet, no baby freaked out by the vacuum cleaner, no comments on every single move I make, no questions about how and when and what and why, no hubby trying to hug me when I’m in the most tricky part of the recipe, no baby sitting under the table eating dry macaroni and nasty bread crumbs (and crayons and small suspicious pieces of plastic).

I love to hear the voices in my head again!!

Don’t take me wrong.. I love my family! But it’s just SO nice to have one afternoon alone.. to be able to do all these things without “help”. And there is SO much more energy left when the evening comes..

¤ 68 Kids first time going to dentist

We went with the kids to the dentist this morning.. first time ever for both of them. It went very well.. Both of them were opening the mouth! =) Efraim even had an x-ray. Everything looked (almost) fine and they will go back there only in another year.

After the dentist we dropped the kids at kindergarten and hubby went to work and I went home with the baby.. and the baby fell asleep on the way home so I had some nice time with only me, myself and my coffee.. Aaaah! It didn’t last so long though since the kids were at kindergarten only for a few hours today.

This is really good for me.. the time in the morning when it’s only me and the baby at home. I’m usually studying until late in the evening, and I have been so tired lately. But if I can have some rest in the morning (and time to clean, cook, do laundry etc.) it really helps for the rest of the day. It is good for the baby too.. to get more attention. She is learning new things every day now.. She is almost walking.. probably she will take her first steps any day now.=)

Well.. I think I should get back to all the work in the house.. In another hour it’s time to start preparing the kids for the night. After a day at kindergarten they have sand all over.. including the hair. So they need to shower.
