253 Happy Birthday

June 28, 2009

E is tomorrow celebrating his 5th birthday at kindergarten… His real birthday is only in like a month. But since the summer vacation starts on Wednesday they celebrate him tomorrow.

Here is the cake I made for him to bring to kindergarten to share with his friends.
He asked for a cake with fishes on. He didn’t see this yet – he’s sleeping. But I hope he’s gonna like it.

216 Birthday preparations !!

March 15, 2009

The kids and I spent the afternoon preparing for dude’s birthday – that is tomorrow!! It is so much fun nowadays to prepare for birthdays – now that the kids are big enough to know what it’s all about. They just love to help with the preparations..
I’m so sorry I can’t say anything more than that we wrapped presents.. Since dude is reading my blog I can’t tell any details..

But.. we had fun. 🙂

Tomorrow dude will be home from work and the kids will be home from kindergarten.. and we are gonna make a small family party for dude.. It’s gonna be only us 5… because all parents and siblings are in Sweden at the moment..
But hey.. we’ll have fun anyway..

I will have to make you disappointed.. there is not gonna be any fancy cake this time… to much pressure at the moment – and I refuse to bake fancy cakes under such circumstances.. We’ll have something else instead that dude loves – and he knows that’s gonna be instead of cake. 🙂

195 Swedish Cinnamon Rolls – Kanelbullar

January 20, 2009

006
These are cinnamon rolls that I baked last Friday. Looks yummy huh?
I tried to translate the recipe of  Kanelbullar into English – but that wasn’t easy. You guys have such a complicated measuring system!! Is there anybody out there who knows both systems that can verify my conversion? Now that I worked so hard with the translation – you’d better try the recipe!!

150 grams butter (1,3 sticks)
5dl milk (2 cups)
1 cube fresh yeast, 50 grams (I have no idea how you measure yeast so this one you’ll have to find out)
1dl sugar (almost ½ cup)
1tsp salt
1,4 L wheat flour (4-4,5 cups)
2 tsp grounded cardamom (optional. I don’t use it because I don’t like it)

Filling
150 grams butter (1,3 sticks) room temperature
½ cup sugar
cinnamon

1 egg
Pearl sugar

Break the yeast in a bowl. Melt the butter and add milk. Warm it up until it’s warmish.(37°C  / 98°F)  Now pour the mixture over the yeast. Finally add the other ingredients and work the dough. Let the dough rise under a kitchen towel for about 30 min or until it has doubled the size.

Prepare the filling by mixing the butter (room temperature) with the sugar.

After the dough has rested, divide it into four pieces. Roll the first piece out so that it is about 1/3 inch thick. Butter it  with the butter/sugar mixture and sprinkle it with cinnamon. Now you roll it up. Take a sharp knife and slice it into ten pieces. Put the pieces on a baking tray with baking paper or in paper liners. Do this with the other three pieces of dough too. Now the rolls have to rest another 40 minutes, under a kitchentowel. Use the last 20 minutes to preheat the oven to 225°C /482°F

Beat up an egg and brush egg on the rolls and sprinkle pearl sugar on them.
Put them in the oven for 5-8 min.

Did you know that the Swedish Cinnamon Roll has its own day? Every year at October 4th is “Kanelbullens dag” – The cinnamon roll’s day.

167 How I miss baking

November 13, 2008

Today when I was baking cookies wih the kids I realized how much I miss baking. I used to bake all our bread for a long time… but I stopped – due to too many babies running around the stove – and eczema. Since then I bake a cake, or cookies, once in a while.. no more.

But today I realized how much I really miss it.. and I ran out to the store with the kids to buy some flour and yeast.. So tomorrow morning I’m gonna bake fresh bread for sabbath!! 🙂 That’s a good therapy when I have a break from studying… And it leaves such a nice smell in the house.. and it’s yummy for sabbath breakfast. Yeay!

155 Girly cake

November 2, 2008

I spent the last few hours making this very girly cake for our three-year-old – to bring to Kindergarten tomorrow. They are gonna celebrate her birthday there tomorrow.. a little bit postponed because of all the holidays.

The picture is not very good.. hard to get good pictures without daylight.

The next 1 hour and 45 minutes I have to finish the paper for my History course. I’m almost done.. have to put some references and go through it again.. which will probably take about 1 hour and 45 minutes so I should better get started.

When?? When will I ever have time to sleep enough??

¤ 148 Rain, Adorable Kids and Apple Pie

October 28, 2008

For about a week the weather reports have been saying partly cloudy with rain possible, occasional rain, rainy etc. We’re waiting for the rain.. the badly needed water – for our dry country. The sea level in Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) is meters under the line.. and even under the line where the experts don’t even know when the water will be undrinkable. Today we actually had some rain.. but not enough. We need more, and we will continue praying for more rain.
I usually say that I don’t need rain myself.. I don’t like to go out when it’s raining. But WE need rain. We can’t live without it. We’re living in the desert – and our main source for water is Kinneret. We want to see the desert green again.. like it’s supposed to be in the winter. – and we want to know that we still have water to drink next week.. that we still have water for all the fruit trees.. that we will have fruits and vegetables to for a reasonable price next year. And that’s why we pray – for rain.

This is not at all what I was planning to write about.. wuups.

Anyway.. a nice – though rainy day. The kids had a great time at Kindergarten. For different reasons both the regular teachers haven’t been there this far this week.. There are two others that we didn’t know before – suddenly taking care of the whole group – 34 kids. That must be tough.. to be thrown into something like that.
When I went to pick up the kids.. both these teachers came up to me- not together.. one at the time.. without knowing the other one did the same thing – and told me how adorable our kids are.. that they are special, that we’ve done a great work raising them to what they are.. and that we shouldn’t forget to appriciate how great they are. I tell you.. this is music to mommy’s ears!!

Now evening.. the girls are already sleeping and the boy is putting on his pyjama.. soon going to sleep. Dude is late from work today.
We both have a lot to do with our studies.. but I’ll bake an apple pie.. and then tell him that apple pie goes only together with Friends.. so we’ll get to see at least one episode. 🙂 Great plan -huh?

¤ 124 Birthday Party

October 17, 2008

Today we had a birthday party for the baby.. although her birthday is next week. But next week my parents can’t come. The birthday cake ended up being the least fancy cake this far this year.. but it was yummy! Our little girl got a carpet for her room from her grandparents. She was so happy she even took a few steps voluntarily.. 🙂

Not one single little tiny piece left from the cake.. The kids loved it.. They finished their piece before everybody even got started eating.
